Nier:Automata Ver1.1a Anime Reaction

Nier:Automata is one of my favorite games of all time.  It was a game that at the conclusion of the game, I just sat there staring at the screen thinking and FEELING the experience that I just went through.  Yeah, I loved the game.

When it was announced that there will be an anime adaptation to be released in January, 2023, I was excited but also worried.  I wondered if the anime can really capture the same feeling that I had while playing the game?  



So far two episodes have been released.  Episode 1 tried to be very faithful to the game and creates many of the scenes, but I still walked away more worried.  The game just felt more epic and the computer art felt more aligned with the tone of the world so the anime failed to match.

Episode two diverged from just trying to recreate the game and that felt much better.  The story of the second episode felt like it can fit within Nier:Automata and I enjoyed.

How will the rest of the season go?  I'm not sure.  I will continue to watch and I hope they utilize the music of the original Nier:Automata more since it is a beautiful soundtrack which fans and newcomers will enjoy.  I can't imagine anyone being disappointed if they don't hear original new composition in the anime.

Life for the Stadia Controller Post-Stadia

Update:  The official instructions to enable Bluetooth mode on the Stadia controller has been published.  The deadline to enable this is December 31, 2023.


Google Stadia will be shutting down on Jan 18, 2023 and while I wish Stadia had found more success the shutdown won't impact me that much given that Google is paying people back for the money they spent on Stadia game and hardware purchases.  I was surprised by this as I'm not sure I remember any other company willing to refund you money on things you bought years ago when they close.  One thought that I did have when the shutdown announcement was made was what will I do with the controllers?

The Stadia controller is pretty nice and well-built and it seem a shame to just throw them away.  I looked to see if I can use them with my PC which was possible but only through a wired connection... until now.   Despite Stadia going away, Google announced that they will release an update for the controller that will enable it to be used as a bluetooth controller.

Controller Button Layout

The Playstation controller, especially the Dual Shock controller from the PS4, is my preferred controller.  It has a typical 4 action buttons layout which uses symbols to identify each button.

I've developed muscle memory for I expect each button typically do which makes switching between Playstation and Nintendo games a bit of a pain since they have the confirm/decline button switched from each other.  Fortunately, each offers to let you remap the behavior for it.  While this work for system settings, each game might have a different behavior assigned to each button so I normally try to map them all into a consistent behavior.  My typical button configuration is as follows:

△ - heavy hit/special attack/switch characters

O - normal hit

X - jump/OK/confirm

▢ - cancel/decline/action

R1 - dash/evade

Controllers from Nintendo, Microsoft Xbox and Google Stadia use alphanumerical values (A, B, X, Y) for their buttons.  While XBox and Stadia have the same button names, Nintendo has a different layout which means that I never remember which is the A & B and which is the X & Y.

My Systems (2021)

2021 brings upgrades to the computers in the house that has been fairly static over the past 7-8 years.   I got a couple of new systems and repurposed some parts from the old systems so this post is mainly to inventory the new configurations for my own reference.

Daily Driver (Self-Built)

For years, I've went with mini PCs because they were quiet and did not take up much space.  I had mine on the keyboard tray under the table top so they were out-of-the-way.  The shift to a regular desktop PC was triggered by two things:  
  1. The deprecation of Windows 10 meant that my kids will need a new PC that can run Windows 11.
  2. The use of local LLMs requires a GPU.
The PN50 4800U was my daily driver and came with Windows 11 although I used Linux on it 99.9% of the time.  It obviously cannot have an GPU which made trying LLMs on it painfully slow.  Instead of getting another PC, I decided to retire the kid's PC and replace it with my 4800U.   I can't do anything about the size of the desktop PC, but the beQuiet CPU fan addressed the noise concern.  The desktop is very quiet and normally I can't tell if it is on by sound and have to look to see if the fans are spinning.

The larger case allowed me to install a GPU that'll enable me to run local LLMs.  This time, I'm just running Linux and not bothering with Windows.  If I do need Windows, I have a laptop that still has it or I'll just borrow the kids.

Asus PN50 4800U

  • Ryzen 7 4800U [Zen2] (8 cores / 16 threads, base clock 1.8GHz, max 4.2GHz - 8 GPU cores - RX Vega 8, 15W)
  • 32 GB Crucial DDR4 3200Mhz  RAM (2x16GB)
  • 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus (M.2 NVMe interface) SSD
  • 500GB Crucial MX500 SATA SSD (2.5")
  • Intel WIFI 6, BT 5.0

The PN50 replaced my trusty Shuttle DS87 as my daily driver.  All the components are new except for the two Dell U2311H monitors, keyboard and mouse.  I added a third monitor, Dell U2421HE, because it has ethernet and a USB-C interface that can connect with the PN50 for DisplayPort, USB hub and ethernet.  This lowered the number of cables between the PN50 and peripherals and reduced clutter on my desk.

Despite its small size, the PN50 is still very high performing, but you do pay a price premium for having something small AND fast.  I did lose some connectivity (fewer USB ports and only 1 Ethernet port).  The USB ports can be addressed with a hub and I use the monitor's built-in ethernet port for the one I loss since the PN50 only has one.

The Dell AC511M is a USB soundbar and can be attached to the monitor stand (not to the monitor itself).  It draws its power from the USB connection but I found three flaws with it: 
  1. It has no power button so it turns on when the PC turns on.  To use the audio-in jack and the speaker means the PC must be turned on. 
  2. The speaker has a hiss to it like many speakers but with no power button the hiss is always there.  I had to plug something into the headphone jack so I don't hear it.
  3. When something is plugged into the audio-in jack no audio goes through the USB.  If there are two audio sources (e.g. PC and music player) they need to share a connection.  I have two PCs connected to the monitor (one on display port and one on hdmi) and I can't have one play through USB and one through the audio in without plugging-and-unplugging the audio-in cable.  Instead, I have a cable from the monitor's audio-out to the soundbar's audio-in and each machine plays through the DP/HDMI outputs.
My ideal system would still be to have a something like the DS87 housing with a Ryzen 4700G (or 5700G), but those CPUs aren't very readily available and there is not DS87-like small form factor cases for them.  Update:  The day after I posted this, Shuttle announced this exact PC.  ^_^;  With my new monitor, though, I would like the new Shuttle to have an USB Type C connection, but at least if I wanted to get more power then I know the option is now out there!

Asus PN50 4500U

This system replaces my wife's Shuttle XH61 system and is an upgrade across the board over its predecessor.

System 3 (Shuttle DS87)

  • Shuttle PC DS87
  • Intel Core i7-4790S Processor (4 cores / 8 threads, 8M Cache, base clock 3.2 GHz, max 4.0GHz, 65W)
  • Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E500B/AM)
  • 2 x Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800)
  • *Intel Network 7260.HMWG WiFi Wireless-AC 7260 H/T Dual Band 2x2 AC+Bluetooth HMC

This Shuttle had been my reliable daily driver for over 6 years running Linux.  I repurposed an Samsung SSD and Intel wireless card from my Asus VivoMini to install Windows and add WIFI and bluetooth to the system.   The antennas that was in the VivoMini was hard to extract so I took the antennas from an old ASUS Chromebook laptop that wasn't being used anymore.  

The VivoMini was being used for kid's remote/distance learning but was a bit under-powered for handling some of the video conferencing features so this system will now take its place.

ASUS PN50 4300U

  • Ryzen 3 4300U [Zen2] (4 cores / 4 threads, base clock 2.7GHz, max 3.7GHz - 5 GPU cores - RX Vega 5, 15W)
  • 16 GB Crucial (CT8G4SFRA32A) DDR4 3200Mhz  RAM (2x8 GB)
  • 500GB Samsung 970 EVO Plus (M.2 NVMe interface) SSD

This system is meant to be a more portable system for when I'm working at another location.  I paired this up with a portable monitor rather then getting a laptop since I don't need this to be a mobile system but one that I can easily transport.


Beelink SER5

This latest addition was added in 2023 as a secondary gaming PC and is used for school.  The specs are decent given the price of under $300 including Windows.

  • Ryzen 5 5500U (6 cores / 12 threads, base clock 2.1GHz, max 4.0 GHz, 7 core GPU,  @ 1800 MHz, 15W TDP)
  • 16 GB DDR4
  • 500GB NVME M.2 SSD
  • WiFi 6
  • BT 5.2
The system came with Windows 11 Pro.

System 4 (Shuttle XH61)

  • Intel Core i7-2600S Processor (4 cores / 8 threads, 8M Cache, base clock 2.8 GHz, max 3.8GHz, 65W)

This system was originally put together in 2012 (with an SSD) and even in 2020 was a perfectly good system for most tasks.  When running Windows 10 or some basic games (Minecraft, Don't Starve) it still felt pretty snappy.  I wouldn't try running any graphics intensive games on it.  

The SSD from this system was moved to the PN50-4500U (system 2) and replaced with a 2.5" Seagate 300GB 7200RPM hard disk drive that I pulled out of the Chromebook laptop that I pulled the antenna from.  After switching to the mechanical disk drive, the system felt noticeably sluggish.  A solid state drive makes a big difference!  

I'm keeping this system around for schooling.

ASUS VivoMINI UN62


The ASUS VivoMini UN62 is a wonderfully small and quiet bare bones system with very good build quality.  It was this system that gave me confidence in getting the ASUS PN50.  I actually own 3 of these system and use them for different purposes which have changed over time (e.g. media station, always-on server for minecraft, etc).  More recently, however, the Raspberry Pi 4  have replaced the VivoMinis for some of the tasks.

The specs for my UN62s are:
  • Intel i3-4030U (2 cores / 4 threads, 1.9 GHz, 3 MB cache, 15W)
  • 16GB Crucial (2x8 GB DDR3-1600) 204-pin sodimm
  • Samsung 840 EVO 128GB msata3 SDD
  • Intel Network 7260.HMWG WiFi Wireless-AC 7260 H/T Dual Band 2x2 AC+Bluetooth HMC
Two served as the kids' computers until I upgraded their setup.  One was repurposed as the machine for schooling when remote/distance learning was put in place due to covid-19.  This system was replaced by System 3 and its drive and wireless card got moved to that system.

Raspberry Pi 4

  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) enabled (requires separate PoE HAT)

The Raspberry Pi 4 is a small wonder of a machine that replaces what I originally used the ASUS VivoMini for and is significantly cheaper.

Asus PN50 - 4500U Initial Impressions

When I opened up the box with the Asus PN50 my first thought was "wow, it is small."  I also had an Asus Vivo Mini which was also small, but the PN50 is even smaller and significantly more powerful.  The size is all the more noticeable when placed next to the Shuttle XH61 that it replaces.  The XH61 was already small enough to put into a drawer.  We're talking near Raspberry Pi level in size (although it is significantly more expensive) and it is amazing how much power is contained in this little box.




Specifications for this system:

  • Ryzen 5 4500U [Zen2] (6 cores / 6 threads, base clock 2.3GHz, max 4.0GHz - 6 GPU cores - RX Vega 6, 15W)
  • 2x 8GB 3200 DDR4 so-dimm by SK hynix
  • Intel 660p Series m.2 500GB SSD
  • Intel WI-FI 6 (GIG+) + BT 5.0

Opening up the case is straight forward.  Remove 4 screws on the bottom and slide the bottom plate in the direction of the arrow that is printed on it.  Immediately the memory and m.2 slots are visible and accessible.  Install them, close it back up and we're in business!

Everything booted up immediately and there were no issues with the Windows 10 install.  There were no driver complaints and the setup process went smoothly.  After Windows pulled the latest updates and rebooted, it took so long that I worried that it froze.  Eventually, it did whatever it is that it needed to do and restarted.  Everything came up, but since I used the Windows that was pre-loaded on the SSD, I had to go through and remove the unwanted software that it came with.  I added a 2.5" SSD as well and there was no problems recognizing it.

I installed Genshin Impact and played at both medium and high graphics quality and didn't see any issues with either.  Genshin Impact is not the standard to measure a system's gaming ability but if hardcore players aren't going to get a mini PC like this.  What this shows is that the 4500U is capable of running a current game in case there is a time when I wanted to play something on the PC.

Throughout the whole time, the unit stayed very quiet.  It is not completely silent but also not very noticeable.

The unit does come with WIFI and bluetooth and I was able to pair a PS4 Dual Shock controller easily and used it to play Genshin Impact.





There are two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A ports on the rear and one on the front.  There is also a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type C on the front and back.  Both support DisplayPort but the front on also support battery charging.  3 USB-A ports is a bit lacking so I connected a hub to one of the ports.  In total there are 5 USB ports and two of them can be used for connecting to DisplayPort monitors.

Along with the DisplayPort on the back and HDMI port, up two 4 monitors can be connected at once.  I normally run a two monitor configuration so this is plenty for my use. 

The front also SD card reader.  The audio-out jack is also on the front and the ethernet port is on the back.  I wished there was a second ethernet port and an audio jack on the back or side in addition to the front.  This would give some additional options to the orientation of the unit especially when it is mounted on the back of the monitor.  The Vivo Mini had this and it was a nice feature for the usb and mini

It is targeted for mobile but useful in a mini pc like the PN50 in keeping the heat down.   Benchmarks can be studied all day long but ultimately it'll be actual usage that matters.  If I don't post anything else about the performance of the 4500U it is probably because I'm finding the performance to have nothing to complain about!

Basic Gaming PC for Kids

After a summer full of "OMG, why is it lagging so much!!!" being shouted out at seven in the morning (compounded by how we're all been sheltered at home due to covid-19), I realized that to preserve my sanity that I must give in and build the kids new PCs.

As a PC for the kids, my specifications are quite different than a machine that my livelihood relies upon:
  1. It must be able to run their commonly played games (primarily games like Minecraft and Roblox) at good frame rates and speed.
  2. Relatively inexpensive.
  3. Allow future expansion (defer as much cost to the future as possible).
Less important are small form-factor and ultra-quiet although there is some consideration giving that we have to put it somewhere and don't want it so loud that they would complain about it later.  I don't intend to do any type of over-clocking (they have to figure that out themselves if they really want that but I don't expect that for awhile).  Fortunately, the kids aren't into RGB lighting and other stuff to make their rigs "cool looking" but who knows what will tickle their fancy in the future.

The final configuration was:
The Ryzen 3 3200G is a 4-core/4-threads 3.6GHz CPU with integrated Radeon Vega 8 (noted by the "G" in the name).  Since gaming aren't core-intensive types of applications there isn't a reason to aim for high core count.  The Ryzen's integrated graphics are powerful enough for my kids' gaming so I can avoid getting a discrete graphics card initially.  AMD's stock CPU cooler is also generally considered to be good quality so there isn't a need to buy another CPU cooler especially (as opposed to Intel CPUs where it's usually recommended to get another CPU cooler and not use what it comes with).  At $100 it was also relatively inexpensive.  With this CPU, I can defer spending money on a graphics card, CPU cooler and additional case fans since I don't expect it to really generate high heat.  

The $70 ASRock  B450M-HDV R4.0 micro-atx motherboard is a basic, modern and has a good reputation motherboard.  It might not have the most cutting edge (usb type-c) or advanced features (dual 10gbits LAN) but it has all the modern features that are commonly needed (DDR4, PCIe, SATA3, M.2, USB3.1, gigabit LAN, HDMI, integrated audio).  On the opposite end of modern it also has DVI-D and D-Sub (VGA) connectors.  The board does NOT have built-in WIFI or Bluetooth though, but neither are used by my kids on the PC.

For the case, I went with the ThermalTake S100, a mid-tower micro-atx case.  It wasn't the cheapest case at $70 but also not a $90-$300 case either.  It is a basic but quality-built case.  I also chose it because micro-atx board are more abundant and cheaper, it being a "bigger" case means more space for components inside for either expansion or air flow.  Basically, I figured I didn't have to fill it up with cooling at the beginning since I'm not even putting in a discrete graphics card or worry about top-notch cable management.

For the PSU, I got the EVGA 600BA which I guess just came out right as I was shopping so there was inventory.  It's $70 and since I didn't know much about power supplies I went with a reputable brand and this price seemed reasonable.

For storage, I felt a 250GB SSD is sufficient and at $45 it was inexpensive.  For Steam gaming, they kids already had a external hard drive that they store an less played games on and when moving between computers it is just easier to bring the external drive. 

For memory, I got 16GB which is overkill for a gaming PC of this type (seems like 8GB is the sweet spot) but it was a little bit of future proofing since if I got 2x4 GB memory that means that future expansion would require replacement rather then addition.  16GB was $70 so one can save ~ $35 when going just with 8GB.

I didn't have to spend additional money on Windows 10 since I transferred it from their old computer so the final cost of the build was:

I'm sure the values will fluctuate, but I'm not someone who is keeping track of component pricing.  I shopped from what was available at the time I decided to buy.  I guess covid-19 has lead to increase in price of a lot of components although I think I avoided some of those (graphics card, popular gaming cases of YouTubers)

Automatically Start Local Minecraft Server on Linux (Fedora) At Boot

Running your own Minecraft server on Linux is pretty simple.  You simply download the jar file from Minecraft.net and run it from the command line.  However, if you run it straight from the command line you'll need to stay logged in and not kill the terminal otherwise it will stop the Minecraft server.

The way to work around it is to use something like tmux or screen and run Minecraft from there.  That allows you to detach the session, logout, and come back to it at a later time so you now have a "headless" Mindcraft server running.

The final step is to make it so that it automatically starts when the server boots up and shut it down when the server shuts down.  On Fedora, that means using systemd.

I'm assuming you're running Minecraft as user minecraft and the Minecraft jar file is located in ~minecraft.
$ sudo adduser minecraft
$ sudo passwd minecraft
Because SELinux is enabled by default, we need to put our Minecraft files in another directory that isn't the user home directories since SELinux policy blocks systemd access to them.  Instead, let's put it in /opt/mcserver.

Start-Up/Shut-down Scripts


First, let's create a start-up script in /opt/mcserver/start_server.sh:

tmux send -t minecraft "/usr/bin/java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar /opt/mcserver/minecraft_server.1.8.3.jar --nogui" ENTER
This starts a new tmux session in detached mode and calling the session minecraft.  Then it sends to the tmux session the command to start the Minecraft server in text (non-gui) mode.

Let's make a shutdown script in /opt/mcserver/stop_server.sh:

This sends a command to the tmux session named minecraft to
  1. Save the current state of the server (save-all).
  2. Shutdown the minecraft server (/stop).
  3. Stop the tmux session.
Make both scripts executable:

chmod u+x start_server.sh
chmod u+x stop_server.sh

Automatically Start Your Server


To automatically start and stop the tmux session for Minecraft, create /usr/lib/systemd/system/minecraft.service:

Description=Start tmux in detached session running Minecraft.

[Service]
Type=forking
User=minecraft
ExecStart=/opt/mcserver/start_server.sh
ExecStop=/opt/mcserver/stop_server.sh
WorkingDirectory=/opt/mcserver

Now link it to the right place:

cd /etc/systemd/system
ln -s /usr/lib/systemd/system/minecraft.service minecraft.service
Now we can run it and enable it to start at boot:

systemctl start minecraft.service
systemctl enable minecraft.service

Configure the Firewall


Now the server is running, you might realize that your Minecraft client cannot connect to it because of the firewall.  To open the firewall to allow clients to connect to your server

$ firewall-cmd --get-active-zones 
$ sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=[zone from above] --add-port=25565/tcp
$ sudo firewall-cmd reload
We can name this as a service called minecraft by creating a file called /etc/firewalld/minecraft.xml with:

Then tell firewalld to load it permanently:

$ sudo firewall-cmd --reload

Backup Your Save File


I also suggest having a backup script that regularly back up your world:

With a cron job as follows:

0 15 * * * /home/minecraft/backup.sh >> /home/minecraft/backup/backup.log 2>&1

This says to run the job at 3pm every day and copy the output to backup.log.

The saved archive (even compressed) can get pretty big and can easily eat up disk space so you might want to only keep the a few of the most recent save and automatically delete the old ones (or move old archives somewhere else).  That can be done with another cron job with a one line script:

ls -tr world-*.tar.gz | head -n -5 | xargs --no-run-if-empty rm
This will delete all but the 5 most recent files and do nothing if there are less then 5 archive files.  This can be put into a script with some logging /home/minecraft/cleanup_backup.sh:

printf "Deleting old backups..."
date +%D
cd $HOME/backup
ls -tr world-*.tar.gz | head -n -5 | xargs --no-run-if-empty rm -v
and have a cron job as follows to run nightly:

# Delete old backup files at 11:20pm but keeping a few most recent ones.
20 23 * * * /home/minecraft/cleanup_backup.sh >> /home/minecraft/backup/backup.log 2>&1

Now each time your server boots, it will automatically run the Minecraft server as user minecraft and once a day it will back up your Minecraft data while removing old archives.

Dragon Quest XI

For most of last year after playing Shadow of the Colossus there weren't really any games that captured my time as much as Nier:Automata and Persona 5.  I spent a short bit of time here-and-there on sports games such as NBA2K, Madden and NBA2K Playground, but it wasn't until X-mas time that I got Dragon Quest XI.  Now some 90 hours laters, I've reach the post-game portion of DQ.


Dragon Question XI is a very pure JRPG.  It sticks to the JRPG formula almost religiously.  If you like classic JRPGs then DQXI is for you!  If you don't like classic JRPGs then DQXI doesn't try to deviate in anyway to bring in new fans so you will probably still not like it with one exception.  If what turned you off from JRPGs is the XP grind then fortunately DQXI doesn't require it.  Just progressing through the game will generally keep you at the right levels and with just a little bit of time spent away from the main story line will get your characters to a level where the battles will be fairly easy to win.

DQXI is a fun game.  I didn't realize how much time was spent while I was playing.  It wasn't that I was so focused and absorbed but rather that the game moves along at a fairly light and fast pace.  I feel this was very intentional.  It seems very deliberate by the developer to have you enjoy the game and not try to fight the game.  Even the location of items (minus treasure chests) is available on the map so you don't have to search for them.  This is a game that tries very hard not to frustrate players.

The story is good and the characters are fine, but because of the way you interact with the other characters (which feels limited) I didn't feel as much of an attachment to them as I did to characters in Nier or Persona.  The characters were more like chess pieces to be use in different configurations when going into battle.  The graphics are nice and modern (in the sense that it's created for the current generation of consoles).

I wish the main character would express more emotions because he felt kind of like a robot, and the music was not very inspiring (I turned the volume of the music pretty low).  DQXI in Japan did not have any voice acting but they included the English dubs for the US release.  I turned it off and just read the text and experienced the game as it would've been in Japan (Note:  The japan release of DQXI on the Nintendo Switch will include Japanese voice acting.).

These are fairly minor and obviously if I have spent over 90 hours playing it that I felt it is a good game and worth playing especially if you are a fan of classic style JRPGs.

Shadow of the Colossus Impressions

Shadow of the Colossus was originally released on the PS2, then on the PS3, and then remade for the PS4 to take full advantage of modern graphics.  I missed it on the PS2 and I pretty much missed all of the PS3 generation so I thought I should try it now on the PS4.


Did I miss out when I didn't play it on the PS2 or PS3?  I give my impressions here.

Following Horizon: Zero Dawn, I decided to play Persona 5.  While not an open world game it still has a strong story narrative.  Although JRPG is often viewed as being a niche among gamers in the United States, Persona 5 seemed to have won over many US fans and is often named among the top contenders for Game of the Year.

Accessories For Console Controllers

To keep things organized, I got some stands for holding the various game controllers that I have for the PS4, XBox and Switch.  There are many options out there, but these are the ones I got for myself because I thought they provided better organization and presentation.  I've been using all these in my set up and like each of them.

PlayStation 4


I have two black DualShock 4 controllers.  These have built-in batteries so they need a dock that can charge them.  Most of the ones I saw held the controller upside down to charge which I didn't like the look of so I bought the official charging station that is sold in Japan.

Unlike a lot of third party stations, this uses the port on the bottom of the controller to charge so the controller are sitting upwards.  It's a nicer look that matches how my other controllers are held.  Note that this is just for the DualShock 4.  There is one that can support both DualShock 3 and 4 but it doesn't hold it upright and requires an adapter.

Xbox One S


The Xbox One S controller have removable batteries so I use rechargeable ones that I swap in when power runs low.  For these controllers, I don't need it to be a charging dock.  I got the Gear controller stand in white that matches the controller colors I have.  Each stand holds one controller.


Nintendo Switch


The Switch is interesting because it has two types of controllers:  Joy-Cons and Pro.  Two of the Joy-Cons normally connects to the Switch itself so they don't necessarily need a separate stand.  I have the Switch in a protective case so taking out the Joy-Cons can be a troublesome so I got a second pair of Joy-Cons for my kids as well as a Pro controller that I normally use.  Thus, I needed a stand that can hold 1 Pro controller and a pair of Joy-Cons.

Fortunately, Power A came out with Joy-Con & Pro Controller Charging Doc for Switch that exactly fits my needs.

This charging stand has a built in connector that plugs into the USB port on the Switch's dock and the top of the unit has lights that indicates that it's charging and when each controller is charged.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Impressions

I'm playing a game with a strong female protagonist in an apocalyptical open world where humanity faces an uncertain future while fighting a horde of mysterious machine controlled by an unknown force that threatened its existence.  Nier:Automata Horizon: Zero Dawn has been consistently rated as the top game for the PS4 in 2017 if not the top video game for 2017 overall.



My SO told that it was time for me to move pass Nier:Automata and 2B so I looked for another game.  Horizon: Zero Dawn has been on my list for while so that's what I chose to play following Nier and while I was obviously poking fun that I went from one game to what might seem to be another similar game I just want to clarify that these two are completely different games that's only superficially similar in that it uses the post-apocalyptical world as a setting. 

Comparing PS4 Pro and Xbox One S

I got a Playstation 4 Pro this past holidays and after a few  months of playing I thought that I'd compare it to my XBox One S.

I was initially attracted to the XBox One S for it's hardware.  It supported 4K and 4K Blu-Ray and it had an HDMI-pass through input option.  The price was a bit cheaper then the PS4 Pro and there were enough games on it that I was interested in even if they weren't exclusives to the console (sports games like Madden, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy XV, etc.).  I don't use consoles as a media hub even though that is a feature that Microsoft has touted about the Xbox One.  What I wanted was a gaming system for someone like me:  a casual gamer but one who grew up with video gaming.  While I was overall content with the Xbox One S, I wasn't always so motivated to play it.  Start-up time was slow especially for some of the games.  It doesn't support CEC-HDMI so I had to always find the remote to turn on the TV and speakers which is surprise given this is suppose to be a media and entertainment hub for both hardware and digital content.

Nier:Automata Is a Great Game

I finished Nier:Automata (PS4) early this morning, but it isn't a game that one can just finish and immediately put away.  Its haunting story, characters and music stays with you even after you are done.  It wouldn't be a surprise if you went on Youtube afterwards to find out more about it because you don't feel ready to walk away from the world that Nier creator, Yoko Taro, has presented so beautifully.

Super Mario Odyssey First Impression

I'll admit that historically I've not followed Nintendo and their games.  I owned an NES as a child but then didn't get another Nintendo system until the Gameboy Advanced.  Basically, while I've played the occasional Mario Kart at friends' house, I'm fairly lukewarm when it comes to Nintendo titles.

However, I started Super Mario Odyssey over the holidays and found myself enjoying it a lot more then I expected.

Retro Gaming



When Nintendo announced the NES Classic it brought back memories of playing games like Duck Hunt and Punch Out!  This year, Nintendo announced the SNES Classic and although they promised more availability I wasn't as interested given that I mostly played Atari then NES and then skipped to the Playstation.  I don't have as much nostalgia for the SNES, but its announcement again brought up a desire to play some of the old NES games.  I decided that I'll set up my own retro gaming console.

Minecraft 1.8 Forge, Liteloader, Optifine (and throw in Voxel Map --- might as well).

Say you wanted to install the Optifine mod for Minecraft and you've read my previous post on setting up Forge, Liteloader and VoxelMap for Minecraft 1.8 (or maybe you already have working mods).  Installing the Optifine mod could be as simple as getting the latest 1.8 version of Optfine .jar file (specifically the 1.8 version since as of this writing the other 1.8 versions aren't supported yet by Forge or Liteloader) and sticking it into the mods directory.

Now, there is a good chance that this didn't work for you at all especially if you just read the setup post.  I saw a number of posts on the 'net where people are asking why their Optifine doesn't work and people give answers who some say works and some says they don't.  The main reason is that if you got the latest version of Forge and Liteloader there is a good chance that Optifine isn't compatible with it.

Go to the Optifind Download page and you'll see a link to the changelog link besides each version of Optifine.  Read it and it will say which version of Forge it works with.  If you have a version of Forge that is newer then that, Optifine won't work.

The solution is the install the latest version of Forge that works along with the latest version of Liteloader that works with that version of Forge.  Then you can drop Optifine's jar file into the mods directory.
